Sunil Gavaskar is a former Indian cricketer widely regarded as one of the greatest opening batsmen in the history of cricket. He was born on July 10, 1949 in Bombay (now Mumbai), India. Gavaskar made his international debut in 1971 against England and went on to play until 1987. He is the first player to score 10,000 Test runs and held the record for the most Test runs and most Test centuries by an opening batsman until 21st century. He also held the record for most Test centuries and most Test runs scored by any Indian cricketer.

Gavaskar began his cricketing career by playing for the Bombay school team and later for the Bombay University team. He made his first-class debut for Bombay in 1969 and impressed with his performances, leading to his selection for the Indian national team in 1971.

In his international debut series against England, Gavaskar made an immediate impact by scoring 774 runs in 4 test matches, breaking the record for most runs scored by a debutant. He followed this performance with a successful tour of the West Indies, where he scored a century in each innings of the second Test.

Throughout his career, Gavaskar established himself as one of the best batsmen in the world, known for his technical proficiency and ability to score runs against any type of bowling attack. He scored his first double century in 1973 against England and went on to score 34 Test centuries in his career, a record that stood for more than 20 years. He also held the record for most Test runs scored by an Indian cricketer until it was broken by Sachin Tendulkar.

Gavaskar was also known for his captaincy, leading India in 14 Test matches. He led India to their first Test series win in England in 1986.

Gavaskar retired from international cricket in 1987, after playing 125 Test matches and scoring 10,122 runs at an average of 51.12. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest opening batsmen of all time, and his records and achievements continue to be an inspiration for future generations of cricketers.

After his retirement, Gavaskar has been actively involved in cricket commentary and has also written a number of books on cricket. He was also appointed as a member of the International Cricket Council's Cricket Committee and also as a member of the Indian Premier League governing council.

In 2010, Gavaskar was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame and in 2012, he was awarded the Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement award for his contribution to Indian cricket. His contribution to Indian cricket was also acknowledged with the civilian award of Padma Bhushan in 1980 and the Padma Shri in 1983.

Sunil Gavaskar's career is one of the most illustrious and illustrious in the history of Indian cricket. His records and achievements continue to inspire cricketers around the world, and his contributions to the game will always be remembered.
