George Eastman: A Pioneering Entrepreneur and Inventor in Photography.

Biography of George Eastman:

George Eastman was an American inventor and businessman who was born on July 12, 1854, in Waterville, New York. He is best known for founding the Eastman Kodak Company, which revolutionized the photography industry and made photography accessible to the masses.

Early Life:

Eastman was the only child of George Washington Eastman and Maria Kilbourn Eastman. He received a basic education and at the age of 14, he left school to work in order to help support his family. He held a number of jobs, including as an office boy and as a bookkeeper, before eventually becoming a bank clerk.

Invention of the Kodak Camera: In 1877, Eastman patented a process for coating paper with a emulsion that was sensitive to light, which allowed for the creation of transparent negatives. In 1888, he introduced the Kodak camera, which used the new film and was extremely user-friendly. This camera was a game-changer, making photography more accessible to the general public and creating a new market for Eastman Kodak.

Establishment of Eastman Kodak Company:

In 1892, Eastman established the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York. The company was a huge success and quickly became the dominant player in the photography industry. Eastman was known for his innovative and progressive management style, and he emphasized the importance of research and development in the company.

Philanthropy:

Throughout his life, Eastman was a philanthropist and gave generously to a number of causes, including education, health care, and the arts. He established the Eastman School of Music and the Eastman School of Dentistry, both of which are now part of the University of Rochester. He also donated millions of dollars to establish the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, New York.

Death:

Eastman committed suicide on March 14, 1932, at the age of 77. He left behind a legacy as a pioneering entrepreneur and philanthropist, and his company continued to be a leader in the photography industry for many years.
