Birth

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888 in Tirutani village, Tamil Nadu . Born in an ordinary family, Radhakrishnan's childhood was spent at religious places like Tirutani and Tirupati . His father's name was Sarvepalli Veeraswamy and his mother's name was Sitamma . In 1903, at the age of 16, she was married to Sivakamu   .

Education

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's early education was done in Christian Missionary Institute Lutheran Mission School and further studies were completed in Madras Christian College. Dr. Radhakrishnan had memorized important portions of the Bible during his school days, for which he was given the honor of special merit. At a young age, you studied Swami Vivekananda and Veer Savarkar and also imbibed their thoughts. He passed the matriculation level examination in first class in 1902 and also got scholarship. The Christian College, Madras also awarded him a scholarship because of his special merit.

Contribution

Career

1. He started teaching from the Presidency College, Madras, after which he worked as a professor at the University of Mysore and then did teaching work in many universities of the country.
2. After India's independence, he represented the country in UNESCO.
3. From 1949 to 1952, Radhakrishnan was the Indian Ambassador to the Soviet Union.
4. In the year 1952, he was made the first Vice President of the country.
5. After this, in 1962, he was elected the second President of the country. When he was on the post of President, India had a war with China and Pakistan.
6. He served as the second President from 1962 to 1976.
7. He retired from the post of President in 1967 and settled in Madras.
8. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was made a member of the Constituent Assembly after independence.
9. Dr. Radhakrishnan worked on many important posts. He was also the chairman of the working committee of the organization named UNESCO in Paris. This organization is a part of the 'United Nations' and does many things for the betterment of the people of the whole world.
   Dr. Radhakrishnan held the post of Ambassador of India to Moscow, the capital of Russia, from 1949 to 1952. He had a huge contribution in increasing the friendship between India and Russia.
10. Radhakrishnan was awarded India's highest honor Bharat Ratna in the year 1954 for his outstanding contribution to education and politics.
11. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, while addressing the nation on the Republic Day of 1967, made it clear that he would not like to be the President for any more session and this was his last speech as President.

Achievements:

1. He served as professor and taught philosophy at the Universities of Mysore (1918–21) and Calcutta (1921–31; 1937–41) .
2. In addition, he was the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University from 1931 to 1936.
3. He was also appointed as Professor of Eastern Religions and Ethics at the University of Oxford in England from 1936 to 1952.
4. He was the Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University from 1939 to 1948.
5. From 1953 to 1962, he was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi.
